WATER RESOURCES LAB
Research
This lab focuses on two major challenges in water resources management:
Maximizing the value of impaired waters; and protecting natural water resources.
Locally, San Antonio is situated in south-central Texas. Other than the home of the famed River Walk, it is the first major metro crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and the southern terminal of the "I-35 Corridor" stretching to the Austin area, forming one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S. with heavy freight traffic. The geohydrology of the area is highlighted by the karstic Edwards Aquifer, designated as one of the sole source aquifers in the U.S., providing potable water for more than two million people in the area and harboring more than 70 endangered species. The presence of active oil & gas exploration activities and growing industrial/commercial water demand puts increased pressure on water security and deteriorating water quality. These factors, all in the context of the increasing frequency of extreme weather episodes (prolonged droughts and intense flash flooding), spark the need to address water security from various research angles.
Value
This lab believes in diversity, equity, and inclusion. We also believe in peer support and open dialogues. The lab preaches respect and accountability.
